Freestyle Presents: Modern Alternative Photography Inspired by Historic Darkroom Techniques

In this virtual class, we’ll be exploring some of these new ways to replicate historic photograph techniques that transfer images to creative substrates, including wood, metal and glass.

Artists and photographers often look to the past for inspiration to express their creative voice, yet many of those styles and techniques are out of reach of the student or home photographer due to the toxic chemicals and processes.  Often that means that hitting ‘print’ is the end of the creative journey, and we lose the hand crafted uniqueness of traditional darkroom printing.  The good news is that we now have modern, digital friendly, safe options to bring classic techniques back into our work, and once again create one-of-a-kind works of photographic art.

Carrie Neher Lhotka has had a lifelong passion for the arts. From an early age, as the granddaughter of Fred Neher, a nationally syndicated cartoonist in the 50s, 60s and 70s, she was encouraged to develop her own artistic talents and to bring them to everything she undertakes, often in new and unique ways.

Now deeply involved in cutting-edge alternative photography as an instructor, Carrie leverages her artistic talent and her experience as a teacher to bring new processes and techniques to audiences across the US and now via virtual seminars across the world. Working in her Colorado Mountains studio, she experiments and explores pushing processes in new ways to express her own artistic voice.
