JANE YEOMANS & DONNA COHEN: Getting the Editorial Assignment: Soup to Nuts
Tuesday, May 5th 12:45pm – 2:30pm
Trying to get into the editorial world? Curious how magazines work from an art perspective? Is it ok to pitch a photo editor? How does the online version of a print story work in editorial? Do you get to keep the rights to images you make on assignment?
Two veteran photo editors, Jane Yeomans, Senior Photo Editor at Bloomberg Businessweek and Donna Cohen, Director of Photography at Bloomberg Markets, will walk you through assigning and assignments they have made over the years, explaining how stories are conceived, pitched, assigned and produced at two leading Bloomberg publications. From conceptualizing an idea to executing that idea in a photograph, Yeomans and Cohen will illuminate for each attendee how to develop an approach to creating editorial work.
A case study of what we will present:
In 2018, photographer Anastasia Samoylova pitched Jane an idea about flooding real estate in Florida.. This led to:
A photo essay, shaped into a different feature story by a staff writer, which then ran in our special cities issue: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2018-08-29/miami-s-other-water-problem
which then led to her shooting this feature:https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-04-23/to-keep-eating-delicious-steaks-we-need-climate-proof-cows
and this commissioned work used in her recently published photo book: https://steidl.de/Books/FloodZone-3132344254.html
In 2019, Donna, commissioned Ana to photograph California real estate affected by fires for Markets Link: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2019-11-23/california-housing-crisis-centennial-built-as-wildfire-fortress
We will also present samples of work that we commissioned after meeting photographers at PSPF as inspiration.
